Domain Authority and Page Authority. Yet another term you need to learn when you are first dipping your toes in this whole online business world. Domain Authority (DA) helps towards determining how successful your website will rank in search engine results. It is a valuable SEO tool that you should be mindful of.

What is Domain Authority
Domain Authority is a measure of how well a website is likely to perform in search engine results. DA is a search engine ranking score from 1-100 developed by Moz to give an overview of likely site performance. The higher your domain authority, the more likely it is going to be that you get ranked high.
However, it is increasingly difficult to climb the higher your number is. For example, it is much easier to climb from 20-30 than it is 70-80.
Domain Authority is calculated by evaluating multiple factors, including linking root domains and the number of total links, into a single DA score. This score can then be used when comparing websites or tracking the “ranking strength” of a website over time.
Keep in mind that Domain Authority is not a score you take at face value.

What is a good domain authority score?
According to Moz, domain authority is best used as a comparative metric. A “good” domain authority score depends on the domain authority of the sites you’re competing with. With this in mind, your objective should not be to have the highest authority score possible but to have a higher authority score than your competitors.
If all your competitors have a DA of 20 or below and yours is 21, that’s very good. You’re higher than they are. However, you still have room for improvement, this is not the time to grab a glass of wine and sit back. You still need to keep on optimising your site as algorithms change and your competitors continue to climb ranks.
You want to compare yourself with competitors with similar demographics and reach as your own.
Why did my Authority change?
Because domain authority is a comparative metric, there will be fluctuations. If your DA is on the lower end of the scale, it is more likely to be impacted by the fluctuations which can be caused by higher domain authority sites experiencing link growth.
Domain Authority is put together by multiple metrics and calculations, this makes pinpointing the exact cause of a change rather challenging. If your score has gone up or down, there are many potential influencing factors.
Factors that can impact your domain authority:
- Your link profile growth hasn’t yet been captured in their web index.
- The highest-authority sites experienced substantial link growth, skewing the scaling process.
- You earned links from places that don’t contribute to Google ranking.
- Moz crawled (and included in their index) more or fewer of your linking domains than they had previously.
- Your Domain Authority is on the lower end of the scoring spectrum and is thus more impacted by scaling fluctuation.
Tips for increasing your Domain Authority
While there are over 40 points that Moz uses to calculate your domain authority and have made it so it is pretty hard to influence, there are some things you can do that will help increase your score.
Be Useful and Become an Authority in your Niche
Offer value to the customers not just from the product, service, or information but, at every step they experience on your website. This can only be done by creating great content and engaging with your followers and readers in a meaningful way.
By boosting your reputation as an authority, you’ll strengthen the identity of your brand, which will not only help increase traffic but also increase the number of external links you earn from other high-quality sources.
Another way to increase your authority is by doing guest blogs on other websites that are relevant to your industry. Think quality not quantity here.
Produce Quality Content
A website with thin, low-quality content won’t be seen as authoritative by Google OR the people. Always create things for readers, not search engines.
To boost your website’s engagement, and, in turn, domain authority, there’s really only way to do it. You must attract and engage a loyal audience by creating high-quality content. Compelling content will also attract the most organic backlinks from other websites in your industry.
Again, quality over quantity. Even one high-quality post a week is going to do much better for you than posting every day with thin, rushed content you have only published because you have to.
Keep on top of behind the scenes maintenance
Website errors, slow load speed, poor navigation, and interface will damage your authority. Optimise and organize your site for both search engines and searchers for a clean experience
A huge number of online users access the web through mobile devices. If your website isn’t optimised there are high chances that you are losing out on a lot of visitors, from both low search engine results and raders leaving your site when they can’t navigate or read it.

Many websites are so concerned about earning external links that they overlook the importance of internal links. Internal links will navigate the reader around your site much more easily. This helps with your bounce rate, time spent on your site and many other factors that work together to form your Domain Authority score and SEO ranking.
Make sure your every post is linked to 2-3 others posts on your blog, and when you publish a new blog post, go back and link from your old posts. This will also pass link juice from old posts to the new one.
While this is not a huge factor in determining your domain authority, it is one of the easiest things you can do right now to help you out a wee bit. If your domain name is expiring soon, this indicates to search engines that your website may not be around for much longer.
However, if you have it extended for a few years, your trust will go up as your website will be seen as a long-lasting website.
Check to see how long you have left until your domain expires. If it is within the year, extend it for at least 2 more.
Many people argue that social media has nothing to do with SEO, but actually, it is a rather important, often overlooked factor.
Not only do social media platforms bring in traffic to your site, but when your content is being shared, it increases your visibility.
Make sure that you have a presence across all major social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest (technically not a social media platform but still an essential platform to be on).

Start focusing on Backlinks
This is probably the one factor which will affect your DA score the most. Try to earn as many backlinks as you can, but make sure those links are from quality sites. If you buy backlinks or get links from low-quality sites (using automated methods), you will do more harm than good.
Instead of getting tons of links from a few sites, focus on getting quality links from diverse sources. This would include links from various geo-locations, various domain extensions, and sources which are not interconnected. Links should be relevant and should be of high-quality.
Remove bad links
Along with creating new links, you should also keep an eye out for bad links pointing to your site. You can use a service to monitor backlinks to get email notifications. Whenever a bad link is pointing to your site, ensure that you get it removed, or use Google Disavow tool to ignore those links.
You should also remove any links posted throughout your website that lead to bad sites or are broken as these will have a negative impact as well.
Schedule time once a month to check your backlinks and outbound links on your own site.
Make sure your website is search engine optimised, as this controls things like where the link juice passes, how easy it is for search engine bots to crawl your site, and how user-centric your content and navigation are.
Check your website loading speed

What is Page Authority?
Page authority is another Moz tool that you should be aware of. While domain authority looks at your website as a whole, page authority looks at your individual pages to determine how likely each of them are to rank in search engine results.
Although SEO and DA are essential, the quality of your content should be a top priority. No matter how well you market and promote, your efforts are wasted if Google likes your content, but readers don’t. Google isn’t your customer.
